Union Grove senior drowns Sunday at Lake Gladewater

UNION GROVE (KYTX) - An 18-year-old Union Grove High School senior drowned Sunday night while on a church outing on Lake Gladewater.

Justin Lee Beasley was a special needs student at Union Grove. He was set to graduate in just two weeks. We are told it's likely that he was not the best of swimmers and that could be the cause of this tragedy.

Rest in peace letters blanket Justin Beasley's locker. "He always came in with lots of energy. You could ask him to do what you needed him to do and worked with me very well," said Inga Davis.

Justin was a librarian's aide for Davis. "Recently he had gotten his CNA license certification which allowed him to work in the nursing home and things like that as a nurse's assistant."

Sunday evening, police say Justin was swimming with his youth group from Cavalry Baptist Church when he began to sink. Upon arrival, fire and emergency medical service teams attempted several dives to rescue Justin, but couldn't.

"We're getting through it. You know it's certainly not easy, but we're just doing the best we can and taking it one moment at a time."

Union Grove principal Chris Wayt says assistance is available to help students cope with this loss. "We met with them this morning as a whole student body and talked briefly about the situation. We have counselors from area schools that have come in to help us with grief counseling as well as some local clergy and ministers."

As graduation draws near, Davis holds on to the memories of Justin that were near and dear to her heart. There is a scholarship fund in memory of Justin Beasley.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 8:30 pm on Lake Gladewater in memory of Justin. Friday night there will be a viewing at Cavalry Baptist Church located at 301 FM 2685 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. On Saturday morning at 10:00 am, a graveside service will be held at West Mountain cemetery.
