Frances Crystal Acardi, 98, of Collinsville, Ill., born Saturday, March 10, 1906, in Collinsville, Ill., died Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Collinsville, Ill.

Miss Acardi quit school at age 14 to go to work to help support the family following the death of her father. She became the surrogate mother of young Frank and infant Marjorie. She would have graduated in the CHS class of 1924 under normal circumstances.

Her lifetime friend Irving Dilliard always made sure Frances attended all class reunions for the next 65 years.

She worked in the garment industry as a buyer for 53 years, beginning with locally owned Silver Blooms.

She was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ and sang in the adult choir for more than 30 years.

Her passion in life was bowling. She bowled until age 86, when the doctor told her she must stop. She was a member of the American Bowling Congress, played in the Senior Olympics several years winning the gold medals in bowling, and donated hundreds of bowling trophies to the Special Olympics over the years.

Miss Acardi was preceded in death by her parents, Frank J. and Anna Acardi; two sisters, Viola LaPiere and Miranda Matthews; and a brother, Frank Acardi III.

Surviving are a sister, Marjorie Drenkhahn of Collinsville, Ill.; a niece, Kathy (Jim) Gordon of Carmel, Calif.; three nephews, Dale (Arlene) Drenkhahn of Mission Viejo, Calif., Todd (Ellen) Drenkhahn of Collinsville, Ill.; and Glenn (Peggy) Drenkhahn of Collinsville, Ill.; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Burial will be in Caseyville Cemetery, Caseyville, Ill.
