Eileen Mae Arntz Hochhalter

June 3, 1928 - April 20, 2013

Eileen was born in Bismarck, North Dakota to Theodore John Arntz and Violette Helen Gregor Anrtz. She often reminisced about the fun she had growing up in the small, close-knit community of Burnstad, ND, where she lived near extended family members. Her last two years of high school were spent in neighboring Napoleon, the hometown of her future husband, Roland (Hash) Hochhalter. She received her RN Diploma from St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck. Soon thereafter, she and Hash married (9-6-49), and moved to Portland, Oregon where he was attending University of Oregon Dental School. She worked at Holliday Park Hospital until his graduation in 1952.

Together they chose to raise their family in Salem, where Hash practiced dentistry through 1988. Eileen focused her considerable energy on raising their 6 children. She had the special gift of making each child feel uniquely loved, identifying and encouraging each one's talents. She made their home a haven.

Eileen loved her community, sharing her positive, loving disposition with everyone she met. The NE Salem Lions Club Auxiliary and Marion-Polk-Yamhill Dental Auxiliary provided not only opportunities for service, but were sources of lifelong friendships. Faith was prime in the Hochhalter family life. Hash and Eileen embraced St. Paul's Episcopal Church as their home. Eileen was a member of St. Helena's Guild, coordinated the American Red Cross blood drives at St. Paul's for 18 years, and reveled in the unique fellowship of the Trinity Choir for 36 years. Throughout her life, her love and gratitude for her church family was very evident. In her 50's, Eileen returned to her chosen profession of nursing, completing the re-entry program at Chemeketa Community College, then working for the American Red Cross, and later as a seasonal industrial nurse at Agripac.

Eileen is preceded in death by her sister, Judith Arntz Fischer. She is survived by her children: Anne (Frank)Weis of Bend, Susan Elder of Salem, Gayle (Ron) Rupprecht of Bend, David Hochhalter of Salem, John (Nancy) Hochhalter of Nampa, Idaho, and Jeffrey (Michele) Hochhalter of Salem. She held her 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren close to her heart. Grandma Hokie's joie d'vivre blessed us all.

Eileen passed away at home surrounded by loved ones. Her family wishes to thank her First Call In Home caregivers, and Willamette Valley Hospice staff for their compassion, expertise and support.

Arrangements are through Barrick Funeral Home. At Eileen's request, there will be a private family service, with a family celebration at a later date. Personal condolences may be sent to: P.O. Box 4533, Salem, OR 97302. Memorials made be made to: St. Paul's Music Guild/St. Paul's Episcopal Church 1444 Liberty Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97302 or The American Red Cross, Willamette Chapter, 675 Orchard Heights Road NW, Suite 200, Salem, Oregon 97304.
