OLIVE JANE BROOKS
Olive Jane Brant, daughter of Elisha Brant and Rachel Root, was born in Benton township, Berrien county, Feb. 15, 1860. She was married to John A. Brooks at Benton Harbor, Feb. 13, 1881. To this union was born Etta, wife of Lemuel E. Fish; Maude, wife of Newell F. Corwin; Pearl and John Jr., residing at home. Also Anna, who died thirty-one years ago at the age of 14 years. There are three grandchildren, Olive May, Ellen and Dorothy Brooks, also an aunt, Mrs. Robert Van Brunt of St. Joseph, where the deceased passed her childhood days, her parents having passed away in her infancy.
Nearly all of her married life has been spent in this vicinity, having settled in this neighborhood 39 years ago, coming here and settling on a tract of land which was covered with forest. She who partook of the traits of her sturdy ancestors, helped her husband clear and make of this a home.
Enduring hardships and privations, hers was never the spirit to complain. She was a woman of sterling quality, a kind and affectionate neighbor in every sense of the word, ever ready to help and assist in the time of need, living a life of usefulness until the end.
She departed this life May 9, 1923, surrounded by her family with the exception of Mrs. Etta Fish who is ill. At the time of her death she was a member of the Royal Neighbors of Coloma, having been affiliated with that lodge for 24 years.
Funeral services were held at the home by Rev. N. R. Woods of the Methodist church at South Haven. Burial was in the Fish cemetery.
