William Robert "Bill" Aikins, 77, of 105 Cedar Meadows Lane, Chapel Hill, N.C., 27517 went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 24, 2010. He passed peacefully among friends and family at Durham Regional Hospital. He died due to complications after a home accident six weeks ago at his farm in Danville, Va.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kaye Anne Davis Aikins; his four children; and six grandchildren, William Delay Aikins, William Robert Aikins II, John William Davis Aikins and his wife, Eva, Cowen Aikins; and children, William Davis Aikins and Henry Cowen "Skip" Aikins, and Pamela Aikins Pierce with her husband, William David Pierce; and children, William David Pierce Jr., Joseph Madison Pierce, Joshua Logan Pierce and Michael Ashton Pierce. He was also survived by niece, Melissa Brown Paty and husband, Ben Hooper Paty Jr., and son Ben Hooper Paty III; cousin, James Delay Bultman and wife, Marsha Smith Bultman, and children James Bradley Bultman and David Louis Bultman.
Bill was born April 28, 1933, the son of the late Delbert Downey Aikins and Mary Temple Delay Aikins Currie in Osgood, Indiana and had two siblings, Peggy Jean Aikins Brown and Sue Ann Aikins Wolf, both deceased.
He was educated at Osgood High School 1951 and was a Kappa Sigma at University of MississippiOxford (Ole Miss) 1955. He married Kaye Anne Davis June 25, 1955, while serving as Captain in the USAF OSI 1955 to 1957 before a lifelong career as Principle of Danville Distributing Co.
Bill loved being around his friends and family and quietly helping those in need in his community. He served in many organizations including the Danville Museum, Caring House, YWCA, YMCA and as President of Virginia State Bottlers Association, Head of Beautification for Southside Virginia and numerous others over the years. He was known for his lifelong love of the outdoors, especially fishing and working on his farm.
Funeral services will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham, N.C., on Monday, June 28, 2010, at 10 a.m. with Burial Services at Mountain View Cemetery in Danville, Va. at 4 p.m. Funeral Arrangements are by Townes Funeral Home, 215 W. Main St., Danville, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The William R. Aikins Fund for Cardiac Research at the The Duke Heart Center, Kristie Bracket-Executive Director External Relations, DUMC Box 3356, 2301 Erwin Rd., Durham, N.C. 27710 or in Honor of William Robert Aikins, Church of the Good Shepherd, 3741 Garrett Rd., Durham, N.C. 27707.
