Shirley Jones Akers, 79 of Galax, widow of Richard Tazewell Akers, passed to her eternal rest on Sunday, July 13, 1997 following a lengthy illness. Her daughter and son-in-law were with her at the Twin County Regional Hospital, where she died peacefully in her sleep. She was born to Walter M. and Flora Jarvis Jones on January 25, 1918. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Kenneth Rosenbaum of Charleston, S.C.; her grandchildren, Ken and wife Debra Rosenbaum, Charleston, S.C., David and wife Elaine Rosenbaum, Greenwood, S.C.; and her great-grandchildren, Garrett, Alexander and Conner, all of Charleston, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Walter M., Jr. and Patsy Jones, Galax; a niece, Pamela Jones and husband, Dwight Ledbetter, Burlington, N.C.; nephew, Walter M., III and wife, Lisa Jones, Martinsburg, W.Va. She was a life-long resident of Galax and a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Galax. She graduated from Roanoke Business College in 1933, during WWII; she worked at Burlington Mills in Galax, and was the granddaughter of R. E. Jones, one of the early businessmen in the Galax area and the first Mayor of Galax. She and her family were in the furniture manufacturing and retail business. Family and friends will be received at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 15, 1997, from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Felts Cemetery, Galax. Arrangements by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
