Joseph A. Abdelnour, a retired Williamsburg area lawyer, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, after a long illness.

Mr. Abdelnour was born March 4, 1936, in Roanoke and lived in Williamsburg more than 40 years.

He received his undergraduate degree in 1958 from St. Mary's in Baltimore, Md., and graduated from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 1972.

Following his graduation from law school, he began practicing law in Williamsburg with the then firm of Zepkin, Stephens, Rideout & Abdelnour. He was a partner in a law practice with John Sadler in Williamsburg Legal Associates at the time of his retirement in 2002.

"He was very highly regarded in the legal community and the community in general," said General District Court Judge J.R. Zepkin.

In earlier years, he was a member of the Williamsburg Jaycees. He was active in the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club as a member since 1973, served as secretary and board member and received the Kiwanis Legion of Honor for longevity of membership and his service.

He was president of the Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce for 1980-81 and served on its board for a number of years. Mr. Abdelnour chaired the Chamber's Building Committee from 1992- 98 and was recognized by the Chamber with its Role of Drum Award in 1998.

Mr. Abdelnour was a member of the Williamsburg Bar Association and the Bar's representative on and chair of the Planning Committee for the current Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse. He was on the Williamsburg Bar's Executive Committee from 1992-94.

He served also on the Parish Council for St. Bede's Church and the Board of Directors of Housing Partnerships Inc.

"He was a great guy and a person of integrity," said lawyer Stephen D. Harris.

His wife, Diane, recalled that he loved to travel and was very close to his family.

"He was a very family oriented man," she said.

Survivors include his wife of over 30 years, Diane; a sister, Edna; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Nelsen Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Bede's Church followed by a gathering of friends at the William & Mary Alumni House at Noon. Internment at will be at 3 p.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
