John Robert Alpers, 68, of Williamsburg, died on Jan. 4, 2012.
John proudly served in the Marines during the Vietnam era as a helicopter gunner in the HMM 261 Squadron based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. After his discharge, John worked for over 30 years in fire service. He was employed as a firefighter and paramedic in Oak Forest, Ill., and the Homewood Fire Department in Homewood, Ill. More recently, he served as a firefighter and paramedic for the James City County Fire Department. In his retirement, John enjoyed working as an associate at Ace Hardware and at Nelsen Funeral Home.
John was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. Always a very positive, caring person, he enjoyed reading and history and spending time with his wife of 45 years, Linda, who survives him.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Jan. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 9 a.m. at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd., Williamsburg, with interment following in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
