HOLDEN MAGEE, farmer and pioneer, was born March 12, 1796 in Georgia. His parents were Jonathan and Rebecca (James) Magee, who were married Nov. 19, 1793 in Richmond County, GA. Jonathan and his brother, William, moved their families to Washington Parish, LA. between 1805 and 1815. They each, along with their sons, participated in the War of 1812, including the Battle of New Orleans.
Holden married Sarah Howell, born around 1805 in Georgia, in 1824, probably in Louisiana. Holden, Sarah and their children, his parents and other members of the Magee family moved to Rankin and Simpson counties, MS, during the 1830s. His parents are buried on a homestead in Braxton, Simpson county. Holden, Sarah and their family including their daughter and son-in-law, Henry J. Townsend and Rebecca (Magee) Townsend, arrived in Texas in December 1839. Holden was issued a 2nd Class Headright Certificate No. 156 (640 acres) in Jasper (later Newton) County, TX.
Holden and Sarah's children were Rebecca, married Henry J. Townsend; Geo. Washington, married Francis Townsend; Jonathan, married Ophelia C. Frazer; James Pardee, Eliz. Letitia Qwens; Mary Angelina, married Wm. Henry Williams; William Lewis, married Amacinda Letney; Joseph Evan, married Rosanna O. Richey; and Green Flournoy, married Charlotte Letney.
Sara Magee died Aug. 6, 1851 and was buried on the Newton County homeplace. Sometime after her death, Holden moved to San Augustine County, living there until his death on October 3, 1898, aged over 100 years. He is buried in Lucas Cemetery, near Broadus, TX. By Ima Mae Townsend
