Beatrice "Betty" Barcon, 89, of Miami died Dec. 19, 2005, at Cobre Valley Community Hospital. She was born in Lordsburg, N.M., and moved to Miami with her family in 1940.
She and her husband, Robert, were active in the community and Catholic church. She succeeded her husband as Miami town council member after his death to finish his term. She organized the first Parent-Teacher Association in the early 1950s. Mrs. Barcon was a member of the Bullion Plaza Museum, Gila County election board, Women's Auxiliary of the Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Union, and was named senior citizen of the year in 1990.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Toombs of La Habra, Calif.; four sons, Robert Barcon Jr. of Apache Junction, Fred Barcon of Miami, Ben Barcon of Chandler, and David Barcon of Mesa; one sister, Vera Campos of Federal Way, Wash.; a brother, David Portillo of Apache Junction; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, followed by rosary at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. Interment will be in Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Services Miami.
