BOONE, May 2.
To the Editor of The Lenoir Topic:
This community has been saddened by the death of Mrs. Hayes, wife of Joseph Hayes, of Watauga county. She was born Jan. 6 , 1829, and died April 25 , 1877 [sic]. She joined Three Fork Baptist Church about 40 years ago, but at the time of her death was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist church.
Mrs. Hayes was a daughter of Rev. Larkin Hodge. She was the mother of 11 children, all living , one of whom is our present sheriff, L. H. Hayes. She had been afflicted, more or less, for six months, but manifested a great deal of patience and christian fortitude during all her sickness, and expressed a readiness and willingness to die. She was buried in the family grave yard, on the premises of John Gragg, near Boone. A large concourse of people were present at the burial. Rev. J. L. Sherwood conducted the funeral services, using as a text, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
In the death of Mrs. Hayes the neighborhood has lost a good neighbor, the church a good member, her husband a good wife, and the children a good mother.
