Mattie Jo Gray Alexander, 78, went to meet the Lord and to reunite with her husband on Friday, April 4, 2003, at Marriott Brighton Gardens Health Care Center in Greenville, SC, after a long period of declining health.

A native of Hart County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Clara Scott Gray and lived most of her life in Asheville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Troy Alexander, in 1991. She was also preceded in death by brothers Berchel Gray and Herbert Gray and a sister Coy Ruth Gray Johnson.

Mrs. Alexander was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher, WMU Leader, member of the XYZ club and the Joyful Noise Band. She retired from United Family Life Insurance Company and was a former president of the West Asheville Kiwanettes Club.

She is survived by a daughter Pat Abee and her husband Jerry of Greenville, SC; two sons, Sam Alexander and his wife Lois of Swannanoa and Phil Alexander of Candler; five grandchildren, Chris Abee and his wife Kristi of Simpsonville, SC, Allison Abee Lazar and her husband Brian of Myrtle Beach, SC, Graeme Alexander of Parkersburg, WV, Diamond Alexander and Eamon (E.J.)Alexander, both of Rosman; two great-grandchildren, Della Elizabeth Abee and John Christopher Abee, II, both of Simpsonville, SC; two sisters, Ann Gray Arnold of Pensacola, FL and Linda Gray Segers of Lavonia, GA.
