ROANOKE RAPIDS — Phillip Gordon Allen, 56, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Mr. Allen was born June 17, 1957, in Halifax County, to the late John David Allen and Erline Gums Allen. Mr. Allen was a loving father, grandfather and brother. His son and grandchildren were the center of his life. He loved family gatherings, loved people and he never met a stranger. Mr. Allen had many friends he always tried to stay in contact with even through his sickness. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ruby and Daisy Gums; and his paternal grandmother, Edith Shaw Allen.
Mr. Allen is survived by his son, Charles Allen; his grandchildren, Jasmine and Chase Allen; his brother, Nelson Allen and wife, Cathy; three sisters, Becky Brake, Mona Daniels and husband, John, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Bonita Allen of Gainesville, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements, and all other times at 269 Fairlane Drive.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Wayne Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery.
