The KY Standard - 4/2/2009

A Bardstown man was killed in a collision with a garbage truck Thursday. Benedict Ballard, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene by assistant coroner Sonny Greenwell. Ballard was traveling north on KY 49 near Hall-Simpson Lane at about 10:45 a.m. when his 2002 Dodge 1500 came over a hill and was unable to stop in time, rear-ending a Nelson County Waste Management Truck that was traveling slowly on the road. Nelson County EMS, New Hope Fire Department and Nelson County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene. Funeral arrangements are pending at Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto.

Benedict Joseph "Benny" Ballard, 72, Bardstown, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Nelson County. He was born Oct. 10, 1936, in Holy Cross. He was a former barber and farmer. He operated "Benny & Crew" Barber Shop in Bardstown. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy, a member of American Legion Post 121 and Knights of Columbus No. 1290.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleophas Fabian Ballard and Anna Marie Hagan Ballard; two sisters, Flavia Moschetti and Theresa Spalding; and five brothers, Aloysius Ballard, Paschal Ballard, Emmanuel Ballard, Paul Ballard and Caleb Ballard. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Susan Thompson Ballard; three daughters, Catherine Ballard, Dallas, Dr. Deborah Ballard, Louisville, Susan Salyer, Cincinnati; five sons, Joe Ben Ballard, Cub Run, Tom Ballard, Cox's Creek, Dr. Jude Ballard, Lebanon, Ed Ballard, Bloomfield, and Brian Ballard, Midway; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Sims, Corydon, Ind.; two brothers, Ignatious Ballard, and Frank Ballard, both of Holy Cross.

The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holy Cross, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. The Rev. R. Joseph Hemmerle will be celebrant. Visitation is 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, with a vigil at 5 p.m. Grandsons will be pallbearers. Mattingly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holy Cross, KY. Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation: 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, KY. Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Two separate vehicle accidents last week resulted in the death of two Marion County natives. On Thursday, Benedict Joseph "Benny" Ballard, 72, was killed in a collision with a garbage truck. Ballard was traveling north on KY 49 near Hall-Simpson Lane at about 10:45 a.m. when his 2002 Dodge 1500 came over a hill and was unable to stop in time, rear-ending a Nelson County Waste Management Truck that was traveling slowly on the road. Ballard lived in Bardstown but was a Holy Cross native and has several family members that live in Marion County. His funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 6, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross. He was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
