William came to America at age 18. He heard that there were lots of minerals in Pennsylvania and decided to pursue the mining industry. He came to America by himself. William was the first person to shovel for Pennsylvania Coal Company.


Wiliam also became a stockholder and director for Pennsylvania Gas Company.



FUNERAL OF WILLIAM ABBOTT

"The largely attended funeral of the last William Abbott was held yesterday afternoon from the late home, 17 George Street. Services were conducted over the remains by the Rev. Dr. C.A.Cure, pastor of the Broad Street M.E. Church. He read portions of the scripture, and also gave a brief history of the life of the deceased. Delegations from the St John's Lodge T. and A.M. and Thistle Lodge I.O.O.F were in attendance. A quartette from the M.E. Church choir rendered "Lead Kindly Light" Interment was in the West Pittson cemetery. The pall bearers were Charles Foster, Jas. MacDonald, W.C. Benton, Thomas Henshall, E.Evans and John Dobbie."
