MR. STANLEY L. BENCHOFF, SR., 84, of 15348 Summit Farm Drive, Blue Ridge Summit, PA died at 3:26 P.M. Sunday, November 28, 2010 in the Waynesboro Hospital.

He was born on July 9, 1926 in Highfield, MD; he was the son of the late Omar E. and Edith B. (Flohr) Benchoff. He lived most of his life in the Highfield area.

Mr. Benchoff attended school in Cascade and Smithburg, MD.

He and his wife of over 66 years, Mrs. Jean I. (McCleaf) Benchoff, were married on February 29, 1944 in Highfield. They moved to the present residence in 1969, which was one of the homes Mr. Benchoff built.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving on the USS Edison in the South Pacific.

In his early life, he was a mechanic for Ross Pryor in Highfield, and then worked for his brother, J. Robert Benchoff Excavating in Blue Ridge Summit. He also helped to build the underground tunnel from 1950 through 1952. Prior to retiring for the first time, he was a salvage manager at Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, PA for 25 years, retiring in 1991. Following his retirement, he was a heavy equipment operator for D.L. George & Sons, Rouzerville for 10 years, retiring in 2007. With all his jobs, he also built four homes in the Blue Ridge Summit area.

Mr. Benchoff was a member of Otterbein Church of Waynesboro, Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Wm. Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post #695 and Eagles Club, Inc. all of Waynesboro, and a life member of Blue Ridge Sportsman.

He enjoyed buying cars and campers and fixing them up and reselling them, hunting, NASCAR racing and Sprint Car Racing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stanley L. Benchoff, Jr. and wife Vera Jean of Blue Ridge Summit, two grandchildren, Trevis L. Benchoff wife Julie of Waynesboro; Shimae D. O'Hara husband, Richard of Waynesboro, two great-grandsons, Mason and Darek Benchoff, one sister, Joan Bickle of Hagerstown, MD and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin great-grandsons, William Allen and Wallace Lee O'Hara, one sister, Helen Goodhart, three brothers, Omar "June" Benchoff, Jr., J. Robert Benchoff and Clayton F. "Pete" Benchoff, Sr.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 2, 2010 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro with Rev. John S. Mullen officiating. Burial will be in the Fountaindale Union Cemetery near Blue Ridge Summit.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home.
