Dr George Gerald "Jerry" Acker, professor of biology at Bowling Green State University, died this morning in Wood County Hospital. Dr Acker, 59, of 1021 Melrose St, died from complications suffered in a stroke. Active in academic, civic and military organizations, he joined the BGSU (Bowling Green State University) biology faculty in 1946 as an instructor. He became an assistant professor in 1948, an associate professor in 1960 and a professor in 1969. Dr Acker served as acting chairman of the BGSU biology department in 1967-68. He received two fellowships, the first in 1958 from the National Science Foundation and the other in 1967 from the Argonne Laboratories. A 1937 graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa, he received his master's degree in 1939 from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla. He worked toward a doctorate at Ohio State University and received an honorary doctorate in 1966 from Central State University. Dr Acker was a member of Sigma Xi, national research society, and Phi Beta Phi, biology society. He was a fellow and past president of the Ohio Academy of Science; director of the Ohio Junior Academy of Science; director of the Ohio Service Youth Congress; fellow of the American Association for Bowling Green Rotary Club. He also was a member of the Bowling Green Masonic Lodge, and the Bowling Green Board of Zoning Appeals. Dr Acker was an elder and clerk of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green. In 1940 he joined the National Guard and served 34 months with the 87th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army. He received three battle stars for his service in Europe during World War II. Dr Acker reorganized the Bowling Green National Guard, Co C, in 1947, serving as the company's first commander. In 1950, he became commander of the 1st Battalion of the 148th Infantry of the Ohio National Guard. With the rank of major, he served as an advisor to the 5th ROK Army Division in Korea from 1951 to 1953. For his meritorious service in Korea he received the Bronze Star in 1954. He was born October 4th, 1914, in Venango, PA, to Mr and Mrs George D Acker (Mildred Lily). On February 4th, 1942, he married Margaret Shepherd, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles D and Frank W, both of Bowling Green; one daughter, Helen M, Bowling Green; his mother, Venango, Pa; three brothers, Jack, James F and Robert, all of Venango, and one sister, Miss Nancy Acker, Venango. There will be a memorial service Wednesday at 3 pm in First Presbyterian Church with Rev Dr Greer Imbrie officiating. There will be no visitation...The Deck Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
