HOLLEY HAMMOND ABELS, 88, of Blossom, passed from this life Monday December 17, 2012 at his residence, after a brief illness. Starrett Funeral Home will conduct graveside rites at 3:00 p.m. Thursday December 20, 2012 at Knights of Honor Cemetery in Blossom, with Rev. Jim Hilton officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Holley was born November 30, 1924 in Blossom, a son of William Hammond and Elsie Holley Abels. He graduated from Blossom High School, then entered the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. For his honorable military service he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and Bronze Star, and the Army of Occupation Ribbon in Japan. He was a lifelong member of the Blossom United Methodist Church and for many years served as church secretary. Following his service to his country, he returned to the place of his birth and was a lifelong farmer. He also worked as a bus driver for both Blossom and Prairiland schools. He was a former Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts.
Holley married Lillie Mae Daniel on July 3, 1969 in Paris.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anna Rebecca Dunagan; two brothers-in-law, Leonard Daniel and James A. Dunagan; a sister-in-law, Dovie Stephens; and two nieces, Rose Ann Figueroa and Betty Bybee.
Holley is survived by his wife Lillie, of the home; numerous nieces and nephews, including Liz and Phil Williams, James and Sharon Dunagan, John and Donna Dunagan, David Scott Dunagan, Mary Lancaster, Martha Stephens, James Stephens, Jackie Daniel, Cindy Daniel, Linda Cheney, Christie Daniel, and Bo Daniel; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and a sister-in-law, Thelma Daniel Chesney.
