Carl Clayton Gable, the youngest child of Jacob Clayton Gable and Idella Seitz, was born on June 5, 1901. Carl was the 3rd generation of Gables born on Deer Springs Farm on the road to Felton, just west of Trinity Cemetery. Carl attended the Felton Primary School located in Felton. His future wife, Mary Alice Akins, and her sister Hazel also attended the school. Mary, when asked in later years whether she noticed Carl in school, mentioned that he would always be throwing stones at recess and that she did not pay attention to him until her late teens.

While Carl most certainly worked as a farm hand for his father extra spending money could be made at the numerous cigar factories in Felton. The 1920 Federal Census indicates most of the children of farmers in the area worked at the cigar factories and that both Carl and his sister, Margie, were employed respectively as a "Bunch Breaker" and a "Tin Foiler". On June 7, 1924 Carl married his school mate and neighbor Mary Alice Akins, the daughter of Theodore Akins and Emma Jane Baughman. It was around this time that Carl started to work the farm independently of his father, Jacob Clayton, and purchased the land. His father and mother proceeded to build a house in Felton and moved there before 1930. Between the years of 1925 and 1942 the Carl Gable family grew to include 4 children.

At some time after 1930 Carl made the decision to exclusively grow potatoes as a crop. The farm prospered and until his retirement in 1978 supplied the various chipping factories (including the Utz and Wise brands) in the area with potatoes. Carl also became known nationally as a trainer of the Beagle breed of dog for "Trial Runs".

Carl died on November 20, 1991 at the age of 90 years. Mary died on August 31, 1988 at the age of 83 years. Both are buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Felton, Pennsylvania.
