Harry S. Alwine, 99, died at his home at 1:09 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2007. He was the loving husband of Catherine E. (Newcomer) Alwine. The couple would have celebrated 41 years of marriage on February 27, 2007, and Harry would have observed his 100th birthday this spring. The funeral service for Harry will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Irwin Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with his former pastor, the Rev. Joseph W. Seitz officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Spring Grove Cemetery. Born May 21, 1907 in Spring Grove, Harry was a son of the late Lewis H. and Minnie K. (Spangler) Alwine. Mr. Alwine was the owner of Pennsylvania Knitting Mills in Spring Grove which, prior to its closing and his retirement in 1966, was the last remaining knitting mill in the area. He was also Treasurer of Alwine Brick Company in New Oxford for a number of years. Harry was a member of Hanover Patmos Lodge #348, F. & A.M. and the Zembo Temple in Harrisburg. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. He was a graduate of the York Collegiate Institute and a 1928 graduate of Lehigh University. In addition to his wife Catherine, Harry will be sadly missed by his two sons, Harry S. Alwine, Jr. of Berwyn, Chester Co., and Samuel L. Alwine of Spring Grove; and his two grandchildren, Shelby and Gavin Alwine. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Alwine.
