William E. Blend, 68, of 207 N. Main street, Towanda, died at 3:40 yesterday afternoon at the Robert Packer hospital in Sayre. Mr. Blend appeared to be in his usual health Saturday afternoon when he lay down for a rest at his home. He went to sleep, however, and failed to awaken. Monday he was moved to the hospital but it was impossible to arouse him from the coma before he passed away. Mr. Blend was a logger at Barclay, Long Valley and Foot of Plane back in the big lumbering days of this section. Later he worked for a time in the mines at Bernice, coming to Towanda about 30 years ago. For years he has followed here the trades of carpenter, painter and paper-hanger. Surviving are his wife; five sons, William E. Jr., Raymond M., Robert P., Donald R., and Dean; and two daughters, Mrs. Carl Dew of Tunica, Miss., and Mrs. Edward Alloway of Baltimore. Funeral announcement will be made later.
Funeral services for William Blend were held yesterday afternoon at the Clifford R. Maryott funeral chapel with the Rev. Paul M. Brown, pastor of the Methodist Church here, officiating. Interment was in Powell Cemetery. The pallbearers were Elwyn Saxon, Charles Space, Fred Hatch, Frank Barnes, Morgan King and Dr. John R. Warburton.
