Mary was born in Ireland about 1816 and came to the Albany, NY area with her sister Ellen, probably around 1840. Ellen married Robert Stevenson of Albany and Mary married recently widowed William Alexander of New Baltimore (15 mi s of Albany) about 1844. Mary gave birth to daughters Ellen (1846) and Sarah (1847), and son William (1848), before the family moved to Aldenville, Pa where another son Robert was born in 1853. Mary and her husband purchased a 160-acre farm at Canaan Corners in 1863, which included the land where this cemetery is located. After her husband died in 1867, Mary stayed at Canaan Corners. Her house, no longer standing, is noted on an 1872 Canaan township map. Mary deeded the cemetery to the Waymart Cemetery Association in 1875. She died in 1904 at the age of 88, having outlived all but two of her eight children and step-children.
