Lewistown Sentinel
Betty E. Acker, 90, formerly of Lewistown, died late on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at the residence of her son David Acker in Macungie.
She was born May 1, 1924, in Philipsburg and was the daughter of the late James Edward Maines and Pearl (Campbell) Maines.
She was preceded in death by her lifelong partner and husband Warren H. Acker on Aug 24, 2007, after 62 years of marriage.
Betty is survived by her son, David Acker, his wife, Alana Acker, their daughter, Betty, and grandchild, Gillian Acker, all of Macungie. She also is survived by a brother, David M. Maines, of Lewistown.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marlene Jemison, of Lewistown, and Josephine Kerstetter, of Shiremanstown.
She spent a lot of her childhood life on West 5th Street in Lewistown, where the extended family gathered often with her mother and father for Sunday dinner. She graduated from Lewistown High School in 1942. She worked at Wian's Shoe Store in Lewistown as a sales clerk, and later at the First United Methodist Church in Lewistown as the church secretary. In her years in Lewistown she also was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where for a period of time she taught kids' Sunday school with her husband, Warren. In her later years while she lived near her son David's family in the Macungie area, she attended Faith Evangelical Free Church in Allentown, where she experienced the great joy of seeing her granddaughter Gillian make the choice to be baptized as an outward sign of giving her life to Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Like her late husband Warren, Betty spent her happiest moments with Gillian as she watched her mature into the young lady she is.
Betty was an avid fan of Penn State Football and sports in general. Even in her declining health she watched football and NASCAR all weekend just days before her death. She welcomed all of her son's friends into her home and was known as a great cook by all who visited her kitchen. Her sweet tea, whoopee pies and cookies were known, discussed and loved far and wide.
The family invites all who knew Betty to celebrate her life at a viewing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at the Barr Funeral Home Inc, at 120 Logan Street, Lewistown. Friends are also invited to attend a service of remembrance at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, 200 East Third St., Lewistown with the Rev. Karen McCachren officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery right after the Friday morning service.
