Dr. Harold Y. Allen, of ­Lancaster, Pa., and Chambersburg, Pa., passed away on January 1, 2013 from complications of cardiac arrest that he suffered on December 27, 2012. Harold, the only son of John and Lottie Allen, was born on August 1, 1924 in Pen Argyl, Pa.

Harold Allen graduated from Pen Argyl High School in 1942, and worked as a precision tool maker for Bethlehem Steel Co. in Bethlehem, Pa., until 1945, when he joined the Army and was stationed in Japan from 1945-46 as a medical corpsman. After being honorably discharged, Harold graduated from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., and then obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1953.

Dr. Allen met Virginia Lee Phillips of Robinson, Ill., in Indianapolis in 1946. They were married in 1947 in Pen Argyl. The family relocated a number of times during the 1950s as Dr. Allen gained experience in the then developing medical career field of occupational medicine with General Motors. Dr. Allen was among the original group of physicians to become board certified in the specialty of occupational and preventive medicine. In 1961, the family moved to Cumberland, Md., where Dr. Allen was the Medical Director for Allegany Ballistics Laboratory and at the Celanese Fortrel Corp. In the 1970s, the family located to Marion, Ohio, where he continued to work in occupational medicine. He served as the Chief Medical Officer for the State of Ohio during part of this time. Dr. and Mrs. Virginia Allen then settled in Chambersburg, Pa., in 1977 where he served as Medical Director for South Mountain Restoration Center and later the Letterkennny Army Depot from which he retired. In 1999, Dr. Allen married Dorothy Larue Allen (nee Wonderley) of Lancaster, Pa.

Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother Cora Allen, and his first wife Virginia L. Allen. He is survived by his second wife Dorothy Larue Allen of Lancaster, Pa., son Todd Allen and wife Deborah Allen of Anchorage, Alaska; son Dr. Gregg Allen and wife Leora Allen of Franklin, Tenn.; daughter Tamara Earl of Mason, Ohio; son Jon Allen of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and son Dann Allen of Walnut Creek, Calif.; grandson Jeremy Allen and wife Kelly Allen of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter Nicole Slayton of Albuquerque, N.M.; step-granddaughter Jessica and husband Blake Stansell of Durham, N.C.; granddaughter Kerchanin Allen of Bloomington, Ind.; grandson Marc Earl and wife Jennifer of Shaker Heights, Ohio; granddaughter Meredith Earl of Durham, N.C.; and granddaughter Catherine Earl of Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Allen is survived by four great grandchildren - Kelsey Slayton of Albuquerque, N.M., Meherrin and Dawson Stansell of Durham, N.C., and Kylie Earl of Shaker Heights, Ohio. He is also survived by Larue's son, James A. Commins, Jr. and wife Karen of Lititz, PA.

A celebration of life will be conducted at Grace United Methodist Church located at 404 E. Mountain Ave., Pen Argyl, Pa., on Saturday, January 5, 2013. Friends will be received from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a service to immediately follow. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl. The Guerro & Ruggiero Funeral Home,, Pen Argyl is in charge of arrangements.
