Dario Garcia Lopez, a son of Gerardo Garcia and Concepcion Lopez, was born in La Ceiba, Honduras on July 31, 1944. In January of 1955 the Garcia Family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana. The young Dario was educated in parochial schools and while serving as a sacristan at his parish came to the decision to enter the Conventual Franciscan community. On October 7, 1961, the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the 17 year-old Dario left home to join the postulants for the Province of St. Bonaventure. Dario entered the novitiate in 1963 and a year later, on August 15, 1964 made first profession of vows, taking the religious name, Brother Timothy Mary. Brother began his religious life with his confreres at Marytown, then located in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Subsequent years would find Brother living and ministering with friars in both Detroit and Chicago. During this period he began to acquire skill and experience in nursing, a ministry to which he would return in later years. Answering a call to serve as a missionary, Brother returned to his native Honduras in 1972; he would spend several years in missionary service there. Br. Dario came to California in the late 1970s and was among the "founding" friars of the Custody of St. Joseph of Cupertino in 1978. He continued to utilize his nursing skills for a number of years then, in 1986, returned to the missionary field, this time to serve among the indigenous peoples of Guerrero, Mexico. Upon his return to the US, Brother ministered for more than ten years with our friars in southern California. His last assignment found him ministering at the National Shrine of St. Francis in San Francisco. Br. Dario loved celebrations and was eager to meet persons of different cultures and backgrounds. Noted for his attention to details of hospitality, Br. Dario often traveled great distances to be with his confreres at moments of loss or celebration in their lives. A year before his death Brother journeyed to Poland to serve as a translator at an international gathering of friars. A few months later he returned to his native Central America to assist at a Chapter there. Shortly after a January Chapter meeting in his own province, Brother learned that he had pancreatic cancer. With a spirit of trust and confidence in the Lord, he prepared to meet Sister Death; she came for him, in peace, during the morning hours of August 19, 2005, 41 years and 4 days in fulfillment of his life as a professed friar.
