On Wednesday December 10, 2003 our confrere, the Rector of the Cathedral of St. Thomas Aquinas in Reno, Nevada died at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, following a recent illness. Father Gregory, age 50, has served as Rector of the Cathedral and Guardian since August 1, 2003. Born in Seattle, Washington on May 7, 1953, Gregory James Gilroy was the second oldest son of four boys born to Leo and Marjorie Reasy Gilroy. Father Gilroy is survived by his parents, residents of Temecula, CA. as well as by his brothers, John, Bill, and Tom and their families. Father Gregory taught for several years in Catholic secondary education, beginning in 1976, prior to his entrance into the Order. On August 15, 1982 Fr. Gregory was admitted to the novitiate of the friars in Arroyo Grande, CA. having professed solemn vows in the Order in 1986, and having completed his course of ministerial preparation in Berkeley, CA., Fr. Gregory was ordained to the priesthood on June 18, 1988 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hermosa beach, CA. by the late Bishop Carl Fisher of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Following his ordination, Fr. Gregory served as instructor at the Archdiocesan bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, CA. In 1990, he was appointed to serve as Associate Pastor, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hermosa Beach. The following September 1st he assumed the duties of pastor/guardian of the same parish. Beginning in July of 1999, Fr. Gregory returned to service in Catholic Education, which he loved so well, ministering at Notre Dame High School in Riverside, CA. Father Gregory served his fellow friars both as Guardian of the local community in Reno, Nevada, as well as Provincial Delegate for Education. Fr. Gregory was an accomplished musician, and will be remembered among his brother Franciscans for his hospitality, love for the liturgy of the Church, and his fine administrative abilities. The Gilroy family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation to the Conventual Franciscan Friars' Education Fund might be considered. A Vigil Service will be held at the Cathedral in Reno on Monday, December 15, 2003 at 7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Most rev. Phillip F. Straling, Bishop of Reno at the Cathedral on Tuesday, December 16th, 2003 at 12:10 PM. Burial will follow at the Friars' province Cemetery in Arroyo Grande, CA. on Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 11:00 AM.
