Fr. Ralph was born on September 1, 1937, in Charles City, IA, where he received his early education until entering Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie de Chien, WI. He entered the Order in 1955 at St. Bonaventure Novitiate in Lake Forest, Il., where he professed his First Vows on August 15, 1956. He then began his college studies at Loyola University, Chicago, transferring later to Loyola in Los Angeles, CA., for health reasons. He remained in California for his theological studies at Our Lady of Riverside Servite Seminary and professed his solemn vows on August 15, 1959. He was ordained to the priesthood on February 9, 1963 in San Diego, CA. After ordination, Fr. Ralph was assigned as an associate at St. Josephat's Basilica for one year and then to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Hermosa Beach, Ca. for two years. It was there that he answered the call for missionary service in the new foundation in Australia. He served in the General Custody there for four years (1966-70) in several assignments. Upon returning to the States in 1970, he was again assigned to St. Josephat's Basilica in Milwaukee, as an associate and then Administrator. At the Provincial Chapter of 1972 he was elected Guardian of St. Francis de Sales Mission House in Hartland, WI. While there he served the Province as Mission Promoter and Provincial Spiritual Assistant for the Secular Franciscan Order. In 1975 Fr. Ralph returned to California, again to serve as associate pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hermosa Beach and the first Vicar of the Custody. By the time the new Province was formed in 1981, Fr. Ralph accepted an assignment as Chaplain to the County Hospital in Stockton, CA. and from there moved on to ministry as Chaplain for the California Youth Authority in Norwalk, CA. He remained in this position for six years, receiving many commendations for his caring and effective ministry from the State and Region. Ralph had suffered for some time with severe bronchial problems until cancer set in and took its toll. He passed away on February 8, 1987, the eve of his 24th anniversary of ordination. The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hermosa Beach on February 11, 1987. He was laid to rest later that day at the Province cemetery in Arroyo Grande.
