Birth: 1894, Poland
Death: Jan. 4, 1972
Torrance
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Brother John was born in Poland in 1894. When World War I broke out in 1914, he served his country in the army for the entire war. After the war he served as a patrol guard on the Polish-Russian border. Later he entered the consular service and represented Poland in that capacity in four or five European countries. He spoke four languages besides the little English he learned in America. When World War II began, he re-entered the Polish Army with the rank of major. Within a month Poland fell and Brother John was taken prisoner of war. He was interred in a POW camp for four years outside his native land. When the war ended, he chose to emigrate rather than live in a Communist state. He came to the United States in the late 1940's and joined the Conventual Franciscans in 1949. He entered as an Oblate and remained such until his death (He never married nor took any vows.) Brother John was assigned to the Seraphic Chronicle in Detroit about 1951 and remained there until 1957. When he turned 69 years of age, he asked to be transferred to California where the climate was milder. He was then assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary in Hermosa Beach. He was always known for his humility, gentleness and faithfulness to duty and prayer. Before he died he stated that he had no known living relatives. He asked only that the International Red Cross in Switzerland he notified in case someone made inquires out about him. After a brief period in the hospital and convalescent home, he passed to his eternal reward on January 4, 1972 at the age of 78. He was laid to rest at holy Cross Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. In 1985, his remains were transferred to the new Province cemetery in Arroyo Grande, California.
