Fr. Sylvester was born April 11, 1923 in Cleveland, OH and baptized Frederick. He received his early education in Cleveland and then attended St. Mary's College in KY and Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Cleveland. He entered the novitiate at Lake Forest, Il in 1948 and professed his First Vows there on August 23, 1949. He pursued his theological studies at St. Anthony-on-Hudson in Rensselaer, NY and after solemn profession on August 23, 1952. He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1952 in Albany, NY.
Fr. Sylvester ministered primarily in parishes and was noted for his involvement in the Pre-Cana Conferences and Christian Family Movement. He served as Vocation Director for the West Coast and spent time on the Mission Band out of Hartland, WI. He is particularly remembered at St. Anthony Friary, Detroit, MI, and St. Anthony's Parish, Rockford, Il. He was present for the first chapter of the newly formed Custody of St. Joseph Cupertino in August 1978. As a member of the custody, he ministered in Riverside, at Queen of Angels Parish, and served as chaplain at Riverside General Hospital as well as providing substitute service in the Diocese of San Bernardino. Shortly after Fr. Sylvester's ordination his health began to fail, necessitating a number of operations. This was especially difficult for a man who was very active and full of life. He also suffered from thyroid problems and eventually renal failure. He had a kidney transplant, but because of his general physical weakness, he died on September 9, 1981. He bore all his illness patiently and in spite of them, remained active and in love with life. He was able to affect those to whom he ministered in a profound way. After memorial and funeral services in Riverside and Hermosa Beach, CA, he was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery, Los Angeles. His remains were transferred to the new Province Cemetery, Arroyo Grande, CA. in 1985.
