|Death: ||May, 1868|
Porter Allum's newer stone at Enon Cemetery, Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania is accompanied by a GAR marker and an American flag. Porter served with the 18th Regiment in the Civil War, but the "G" for his company on the newer stone is incorrect: He served with Company C. Originally interred in Supler Cemetery, his 1868 stone was among those removed in 1981 to Enon Cemetery, Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania where it, too, can be viewed today.
The photo of Porter's 1868 stone, taken by Cherie Atkinson Clark in 2008, shares the appearance of the marker 140 years after his death. Across the very top is MY HUSBAND ... followed by PORTER ALLUM ... Co. C. 18th Reg't. Pa. Cav. ... Died May (?), 1868 ... Aged 27 yrs 11 Ms & 23 D.
His day of death has been found May 11 (transcription from stone), May 14 (transcription from stone) and May 21, the latter, accurate or not, attested to by his widow Louisa in her widow's pension claim.
According to Porter's Civil War pension file, he died from "consumption contracted in the service from cold and measles."
With certainty, Porter died in mid-to-late May. His daughter, Eliza Rozelle, was born in early June. Son Everly Ellsworth Allum was age 2.
