James Weldon ‘Brub’ Bassler
May 3,1926- Jan. 8,2008
James Weldon “Brub” Bassler, 81, The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, formerly of Fredericksburg, rural Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday morning at the village after an extended illness.
He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late Joseph Harold and Beulah K.(Rutter) Bassler.
He married Mary I. Brumbaugh Aug. 3, 1947, at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg RR 2.
Surviving are his wife; three sons: James H. (wife, Mid) of Martinsburg RR 2, Donald E. (wife, Jolene) of Curryville and Jerre L. of Hollidaysburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John H.; and a sister, Ada Mae Fisher.
Mr. Bassler was a member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, where he formerly served as a deacon, board chair and Sunday schoolteacher.
Brub retired from the USDA as a meat inspector after 20-plus years.
He was a 1944 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School.
Mr. Bassler was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines and attaining the rank of yeoman 3rd class.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially his grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at
Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg RR 2.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church by
Pastors David F. and Linda S. Banaszak.
Private interment will be at Brumbaugh Cemetery, Martinsburg RR 2.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to Clover Creek Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund.
Arrangements are by John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
