Adam Black joined the York County Militia on March 8, 1775 as an Ensign. During 1776 His company marched to Philadelphia, Trenton, Newark and Amboy. Afterwards he was promoted to Captain. In 1777 he served at Valley Forge, likely as a quartermaster charged with providing cattle to feed the troops wintering there. In 1781 and 1782 he was charged with guarding British and Canadian prisoners at Camp Security in Springettsbury Township, York County as commander of Co. 7.
