She was the daughter of Charles and Beatrice (Tumbo) Boone.
She married Arthur "Artie" E. Allen Jr. on May 28, 1949, in Peoria. He passed away on May 1, 1977, in Peoria.
She was also preceded in death by her very special granddaughter, Audrey Joanne Allen; two sisters, Iva McPike and Betty Stewart; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Boone.
Joan worked at Hiram Walkers Distillery for 25 years until the plant closed. She was proudly the first African-American to be working on the distillery line.
After retirement she worked 17 years for DCFS as a foster parent support specialist. She was also a foster parent herself.
She was a judge and worked in the office for the Election Commission for three years.
She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 74, also belonging to the Golden Circle in Springfield, Ill. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where she worked with the Missionary Society; she was an usher, helped with fundraising programs, plays, style shows, and Tom Thumb weddings. She loved working in her church as long as she was able.
