The grave is at the far back of the cemetery, to the southeast side.

Footstones for the tombstone of Alex and Allen Blair. The news paper story from the Durant Daily Democrat, 07 Sep 1917, says their older brother Orville was injured in the bridge collapse. The article says both boys had broken necks. Mr. Price, one of the carpenters, also died.

I first saw this stone when I was a kid, probably around 1959 or 1960. I always wondered why two kids, born on the same day, died on the same day 11 years later. Mystery was solved when I mentioned it to Wanda Todd at the Bryan County Heritage Assoc., and she did the research. The stone says "Twins of W.T. and Josie M. Blair. From mother's arms to the arms of Jesus."

Hello,
I live about twelve miles South of Bokchito, Ok. I have been seeing the correspondence back and forth about the Blair twins. I am not related to the Blair line. I just became very interested to know what the real story was, and to share it with others who are interested. I went to the Durant Daily Democrat newspaper office in Durant, Ok and got a copy of the write up from the newspaper on microfilm. It was in the newspaper on Sept. 7, 1917. I made a copy of the original write up. I don't have a scanner so I am going to type it word for word below.

3 DEAD, 2 ARE INJURED WHEN BRIDGE FALLS

Two small boys and a man were instantly killed and two other men were injured, but not seriously, at 4:30 Thursday evening, when a large wooden bridge nearing completion over Blue river, eight miles South of Bennington collapsed, precipitating the two little boys who were watching the work, and four carpenters, with the wreckage, into the bed of the river thirty feet below. The dead are: two eleven-year-old twins, sons of Mr. Blair, who lives on the Bud Risner farm, the house of which is only a furlong from the river, and Mr. Price, a carpenter of about 45, who lived near the scene of the accident. The injured were: Mr. Pits, a Durant carpenter, who was painfully cut and bruised in the fall, but who came home Thursday evening without aid: and Orville Blair, a brother of the two little boys who were killed. Marvin Hay another Durant carpenter was on the bridge at the time, and fell with the wreck, but escaped injury.
Without warning the whole structure suddenly careened downstream and fell with a terrific crash to the waters thirty feet below. Instant death awaited the two little boys and Mr. Price, none of whom uttered a sound or made a move after the crash, the boys both having their necks broken and Mr. Price apparently instantly killed by a blow on the head. The bodies of the dead man and the two boys were recovered.
The bridge under construction was according to information reaching this office being built by public subscription and was to cost about $1,000.
Just what may have caused the accident is a mystery to all concerned.
What arrangements have been made for the burial of the dead had not been learned at the time this paper was published.
It is said that the bridge will have to be entirely rebuilt.
