George William Ackroyd went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, July 22, 2008.

Mr. Ackroyd was born Aug. 23, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa. He joined the United States Navy as a young teenager and served his country for more than 20 years, retiring in 1964 as a chief petty officer. He served on the USS Valley Forge as an original crew member. He served in World War II including the invasion of Normandy as part of the troop transport crew.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Taylors, since 1977, ministering as a faithful prayer warrior after becoming homebound several years ago.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Rosyland Jean Breese Ackroyd; four daughters and their husbands, Karen and Robert Turner, Kay and David Finley, Kimi and David Reader, and Kathy and Kenny Hooper; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Joyce Doyle. He was predeceased by a son, Gary William Ackroyd.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, Taylors. Burial with military honors will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Open Arms Hospice, 1836 W. Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680 or Grace Baptist Church, 5020 Old Spartanburg Road, Taylors, SC 29687.
