James Hedges Roberts, son of William and Rebecca Hedges Roberts lived at Garretstown, Jefferson County, Virginia. Soon after being married in 1807 to Jane Wilson, he moved to Lawrenceville, Indiana (along the Ohio River) and started a tannery. In March 1810 he came to Clark County, Ohio entered land and built a log cabin where later was established the homestead. He made periodical trips to the land and about 1819 or 1820, after the death of his wife and child Milton, he came with his children, built a new log home in which the family lived until 1852 when he built a brick house. In 1818, while building his first cabin, an Indian came and by signs signifying friendship, desired to know where the deer trails were located. For many years this Indian made periodical visits to the Roberts cabin, his coming being announced by walking in and setting down his gun. The assurance of friendship was made by shaking hands (both hands) and by signs usually made it known that he was hungry. This Indian was always referred to as "Old Logan". The remains of James' wife, Jane and their child Milton, were interred at Lawrenceville, Indiana. It is said this old cemetery has been partly destroyed by the Ohio River. Letters Patent were granted to James H. Roberts for land. The northwest quarter section of township6 in range 10 between the Miami Rivers and bearing the date 27 June 1817, signed by the president James Monroe. This land is located in Clark County, Ohio. ________________________________________________________ He came to Clark Co., Ohio in 1810 from Virginia. After his marriage to Mary Ann WREN they located on a farm, where they remained till the time of their deaths. James H. entered the land on which he lived, and, in 1817, it being unsafe to send money by the mails, he rode to Washington on horseback to make the last payment on his farm He was a soldier of the war of 1812, and served under Gen. Harrison in the Northwestern army. He died at the advanced age of 79 years 11 months.
