James was a blacksmith and a self-taught veterinarian who raised and raced sulky horses. After their Sterling Township farmhouse burned to the ground and claimed the life of 5-year-old son, Frankie, James and Rose moved their young family to a house in Marathon, where James built a barn which had a floor that could be raised to work from beneath. Later, James took a job as caretaker of the county fairgrounds race track in Owensville, where he and his brothers and son, Bill, raced horses. He and Rose sometimes lived in a small, white house located near the fairground's entrance.
