Walter J. Avery 1927-2004
Walter J. Avery was born June 29, 1927 in Lostine, Wallowa county, Oregon to John Henry Avery and Celia Frances (Moore) Avery.
His siblings include; Marjorie Avery, Ethel Berthyl (Avery) McCullcoh, John William Avery, Earl Vernon "Buck" Avery, William E. Avery, John Leroy Avery, Lawrence Ellsworth Avery, Celia Frances Avery Henry F. "Hank" Avery and Jesse Alvin Avery.
Walt worked as a ranch-hand for several Wallowa county ranches.
He married Joy Frances Bennett on September 15, 1948 in Joseph, Wallowa county, Oregon.
They became parents to two daughter; Violet (Avery) Kelsey and Shirley (Avery) Taft.
Walt and Joy moved to Portland, where Walt worked on several area farms and in the shipyards where he was a member of the Boilermakers Union for many years. In 1972 Walt and Joy moved back to Joseph, where they stayed until 1988 when they purchased a home in Irrigon.
Throughout his life Walt enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with horses. He loved to teach his grandchildren about the hobbies he loved to do. He also enjoyed working on cars. He helped raise all four of his grandchildren and was a great support to his entire family.
Walter passed away July 25, 2994 in Irrigon, Morrow county, Oregon, from cancer.
He was laid to rest July 28, 2004 in the Prairie Creek Cemetery, outside the town of Joseph, in Wallowa county, Oregon.
