Naomi "Neoma" May Barkhurst, 95, died Jan. 23, 2006, at Marquis Care at Mount Tabor in Portland with her family by her side.
Mrs. Barkhurst was born March 14, 1910, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Ophur John and Bertha Beulah (Burton) Eagle. She was the oldest of their six children.
She spent a number of her years growing up on the Canadian prairie and remembered chasing prairie dogs and tumbleweed and picking up buffalo chips to supply her family's sod house with heat.
She also took care of her younger siblings.
After graduating from high school in Wadsworth, Ohio, she moved with her family to Portland and worked for Montgomery Ward as a comptometer operator.
She was later transferred to San Francisco, where she married her first husband Albert Wedell. During their marriage, they lived in many states, including Hawaii when it was still a territory, and, while living in Oakland, Calif., she gave birth to her oldest daughter Arlene.
The marriage ended in divorce and in 1956 she married her second husband Arthur Barkhurst. Her younger daughter Julie was born in 1957 in Klamath Falls.
Mrs. Barkhurst lived in Keno for many years before ill health forced her to move back to Portland, where her oldest daughter could care for her.
She was a longtime member of Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She loved animals and was known as the "cat lady of Keno" with many stray cats in the area being dumped in her yard.
She was an accomplished cook and well known for her pies and wild plum jam.
Survivors include her daughters Arlene Young of Portland and Julie Barkhurst of Colorado; sister Lorna May Hibbs of Lincoln City; brother Richard Ellsworth Eagle of Scappoose; grandchildren Troy Lodi, Keith and Leslie Young and Adam and Rebecca; and great-grandchildren Genny, Eric and Matthew Young and Shauna Lodi.
