William "Bill" Anderson, 88, of Jefferson died Wednesday evening at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born in Salem to James and Ruth Anderson, graduated from Jefferson High School, and attended Willamette University. He married Bernice Williams on March 14, 1943. He married Theresa Unruh Patton March 14, 1953, and they lived in Albany and Jefferson.

Bill was a shipping clerk at Simpson's Albany Plywood for 38 years, and was an elected officer with Local Union No. 2942 of the Western Council of Industrial Workers from 1948 until he retired. He was president of the Simpson Albany Employees Federal Credit Union during its operation. His favorite pastimes included rock hounding, prospecting, backpacking, fishing and hunting and reading. Active in community affairs as a PTA member, 4-H Leader and the advisory councils of Albany Assembly Order of Rainbow for Girl and Bethel 78 of Jobs Daughters, he believed in contributing back to society.

He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II for which he enlisted in October of 1942. He trained as Aviation Ordinanceman and gunner in Wichita, Fla., and Oklahoma, later to become a member of U.S. Bombing Squadron 146. Shipping out of NAS Whidbey Island, Wash., the squadron patrolled the South Pacific Theatre, including The Marshall Islands and Australia. He was awarded Gold Stars First and Second Awards for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. He received an honorable discharge of service in November of 1945. He and Theresa enjoyed many reunions with the squadron members over the years.

He was an active member in the Masonic fraternity, and was raised a Master Mason in Jefferson No. 33 AF&AM in 1946. He served as master of Jefferson Lodge and Scio Lodge No. 39, and as district deputy of the Grand Master in 1986-87. He served as worthy patron of Euclid Chapter No. 70 Order of Eastern Star and as royal patron of Cascade Court Order of Amaranth, and belonged to the York Rite Freemasonry.

Bill is survived by children Paul Anderson and wife Eli of Sherman, Texas, Jon Anderson and wife Marty of Olympia, Wash., Elizabeth Walker and husband Scott of Tillamook, and Ruth Buchheit and husband Marty of Albany; son-in-law Art Royer of Crabtree; and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter Clara Patton Royer; and brothers James and Frederick Anderson.
