BAKER - William H. Baker of 2634 Cal Young Road, Eugene, died November 22,1985 in Mount Angel, Oregon at the age of 73. He was born December 16, 1911 in Portland. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, continuing to serve as an officer in the reserves, retiring after 30 years of service. Prior to entering the Navy, he was Superintendent of Schools in Grass Valley, Oregon. He was head of the department of Biological Sciences and was chairman of the Botany Department at the University of Idaho prior to his retirement. He was the author of several books and numerous papers on botany. He is survived by a son, James Baker, Salem; brother, Robert E. Baker, Eugene; 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Molly Cochran. Services will be held Monday, November 25 at 1 p.m. in ENGLAND'S EUGENE MEMORIAL CHAPEL with private committal to follow in the Gillespie Cemetery.~~~

William H. Baker helped establish the The Idaho Academy of Science. He was the institution's first president, from 10 May 1958 to December 1960.

Baker was the son of native Canadian William T. Baker and native Oregonian Helen T. (Hudson) Baker. His grandfather was Irish immigrant Thomas Arbuthnot Hudson and his grandmother was Amanda E. Hudson. They were pioneers in Wasco County, Oregon.

William Hudson Baker was married to Molly (Fields-Cochran) Baker. She was the great-great-granddaughter of Rev. Jacob Gillespie.
