John Lucas Arzner, Jr. [wife, Eva Riddle (1876-1964)] is the son of John L. Arzner, Sr.[wife, Emma Jane Roberts(1841-1914)] and a grandson of Jesse Roberts who came from Polk County early in the spring of 1851 and settled on a donation land claim at Roberts Creek [he was the third
settler in the area] at the base of Robert's Mountain not far from today's, Canyouville, Oregon. He and his two son's, George Washington and Nels [Nelson about 12 and 15) brought about five hundred head of Spanish cattle with them. They were stockmen and intended on building
set a ranch on their claim. He later built a flour mill and other businesses at what became Canyonville. Mrs. Cryus Russell is a daughter.
Roberts had taken a Donation Land Claim of 160 acres north of the settlement. The two partners later sold the store to Jesse Roberts, brother of Joseph. It was Jesse who, in 1856, built the Roberts Hotel and the grist mill. In 1858 he platted the town site and named it Canyonville. Jesse Roberts died at the age of 47 and is buried along
side his wife, Mary Jane, in the old Canyonville Cemetery on the hill overlooking the town he founded. It is about six miles from Riddle, Oregon.
