TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Fred Barnett, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, in Albuquerque.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in San Jon Cemetery in San Jon by Dunn Funeral Home of Tucumcari.
Mr. Barnett was born May 26, 1923, at home near Porter, the son of Percy Barnett and Etta Rose.
After a short tour in the U.S. Navy, Fred farmed near Porter for about 30 years before moving to Tucumcari to own/manage restaurants and sell real estate. Fred studied and passed his real estate brokers exam at the age of 73.
Fred and his wife, Zula, are members of San Jon Baptist Church, and Fred was a leader in the community. He was elected to two terms as Quay County commissioner and served on the Trigg Memorial Hospital board.
Fred was an avid golfer. He won a number of tournaments, made seven holes-in-one and was able to score lower than his age for the last few years.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Zula Gowdy Barnett; a son, Larry Barnett and wife Vicki of Hobbs; a daughter, Sherry Tillma and husband Jack of Las Cruces; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be his "golfing buddies," who have taken great care of him the last few years.
The family suggests memorials be to San Jon Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
