Helen M. Akes
Age 88, a resident of Espanola, passed away on Wednesday September 30, 2009 following a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband; Leonard H. Akes MD, Parents; Victor and Hazel Hall. Brothers; Vernon Hall and Dale Hall. Sister; Lucille Schmidt. Father and mother-in-law; Orville and Silkey Akes. Helen was born in Missouri and raised in Parsons, Kansas. She attended York College in Nebraska earning a Bachelors Degree in Education. She came to Espanola in 1942 to teach at the McCurdy Missions. She returned to Kansas City, Kansas to marry the love of her life, Leonard Akes. Upon graduation from medical school and residency, Helen brought Dr. Akes back to Espanola where they set up a medical practice. Together they raised five children. She was active in the United Methodist Church, Woman's Club, Girl Scouts and sang at Hacienda de Salud. Helen was a loving Mother and friend and a wonderful Christian woman. She is survived by her children; Lee Ann Rewey and companion Richard Brown of Dallas, Texas, Vernon Akes and wife Chrissy of Albq., Dr. Lindy Akes and wife Barbara of Espaņola, Dixie Cozart of Espanola and Aline Akes of Albq., Grandchildren include; Sean Pomeroy and Julie, Cord Nuņez, Samantah Nuņez-Molina and John, Jeremy Salazar, Lindsey Salazar, Andrea Martinez, Renee Martinez and companion Anthony Montoya, Madison Akes, Lucas Akes, Kathy Cozart, Michelle Cozart, Justina Martinez and Lawrence Martinez. Sister-in-law; Bonita Carson. 6 great grandchildren. Very dear lifelong friend; Gene Hamilton of Glorieta and numerous other relatives and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be; Lucas Akes, Lawrence Martinez, Jeremy Salazar, Richard Brown, Anthony Montoya and Cord Nuņez. Honorary pallbearers named are; Sean Pomeroy, David Hamilton, Dennis Miller, Kevin Hauck and Pete Gomez . The family requests memorial contributions be made to McCurdy School in Helen's memory. The family of Helen Akes has entrusted her care to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory.
