Born on the fourth of July of 1915, Lucille Martin Cooper initially called Celina, Texas home. She died peacefully at her Portales home on July 3, just one day short of her 96th birthday. At the age of 12, she moved with her parents, Amye and Sam Martin and two brothers to Sedan, NM. She graduated Clayton High School in 1933, then attended Edmondson School of Business in Chattanooga, TN.
Her family moved to Portales in 1936, and on August 21, 1937, she married Lewis Cooper, a lifetime rancher in Kenna. "I had never been on a ranch before I married Lewis, Lucille said. "I didn't know what I was getting into, but I learned to love it. I was never a cowgirl, but I cooked for all of those cowboys."
In 1971 her husband died in a car accident; three years later Lucille moved from Kenna to Portales. After being widowed for 16 years, Lucille married a friend and neighbor, Stanley Good of Kenna. After two years of marriage, Stanley passed away in March of 1989.
Lucille was active in the Elida, and Portales Federation of Women's Clubs. She served as state president of the New Mexico Women's Federation for 2 years and on the General Federation Board for 12 years. She was invited to attend the National Prayer Breakfast by invitation of President Richard Nixon.
Church was always a big part of her life, and she was an active member of the Kenna Community Church while living in Kenna. After moving to Portales, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, and served on many committees. She also served on the New Mexico Baptist Foundation Board, was an active member of PEO, and was a regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Those who knew her knew that, Lucille, served on many more boards and committees throughout her lifetime.
Traveling was one of her greatest joys; she has traveled to Europe and has taken many cruises. Her favorite was the flowers of Amsterdam.
Lucille's hobbies included watching basketball, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders and Oklahoma University Sooners where her grandson, Nathan Erdmann, played.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Amye Martin; husbands, Lewis Cooper and Stanley Good, and brothers, Hayden and Harold Martin.
She is survived by daughters, Jenny Clemmons and husband, John of Kenna, and Jackie Ingle of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Rebecca Davis and husband, Chad of Texico, Nathan Erdmann and wife, Maxi of Keller, TX, Victoria Clemmons of Burbank, CA, Marissa Olson and husband, Matt of Las Cruces; and great-grandchildren, Cooper and Skyler Davis, Chloe, Claudia, Gracie Cate, and Cash Erdmann; as well as Irene Chavez and Destiny Serna her caregivers to whom the family will be eternally grateful.
