Everett Eugene Belcher was born 21 Dec 1875 in Monroe Co, KY. He married Sarah Ann GENTRY on 06 April 1906 in Monroe Co, KY. They had four children: Ruby E, Ralph O, Sammy J, and Jessie M.
In 1908 the family left KY and filed a claim on land near Inez, NM. As there were no post offices in the area, he opened the Belcher Post Office in 1907, and delivered mail with horses and wagon. When the post office was opened at Rogers, NM in 1911, the Belcher Post Office was closed.
In May 1913, Everett and Sarah Ann moved to California with the four children, hoping the milder climate would help Sarah's asthmatic condition. Tragedy struck almost immediately and she died on 04 June 1913 at the Los Angeles County Hospital. Her death listed as Cerebo Spinal Fever by the attending physician. A grieving Everett placed the four children, ages two to seven, in a children's home.
In a few months he brought the children back to Inez. Everett's mother, Sarahmandy, a widow, came to live with the family until her death at age 85 in 1921.
Sixteen grandchildren of Everett and Sarah Ann still live in the Rogers, Dora, Portales, and Clovis area, along with their families.
In 1943 Mr. Belcher sold the farm at Inez and bought a farm southwest of Portales, which he leased to farmers in the area. He passed away at age 86 at the home of his daughter Jessie Owen, in Portales.
The grandchildren have many fond memories spent with 'Grandad' Belcher. It was a happy experience growing up on the farm to see him come walking down the road, or across the pasture, to spend a few days, and to tell the stories of his life and of friends in KY. He never learned to drive a car, and walked many miles as he got older to visit with family and friends.
