QUOTED FROM PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER NEWSPAPER ARTICLE MAY 7, 1880 (even the incorrect spellings and sentence construction)

GALVESTON, MAY 6
A mining camp attacked by Indians and 5 Men Killed

A special despatch to the NEWS from Mossilla, N M says: "Cooney's mining camp in the Mongalen Mountains was attacked on Thursday evening by Indians, supposed to be Victorias. One man was killed and one wounded. The attack was made about sundown, and, the men being scattered, little resistance could be made.

"The attack was renewed on Friday morning and the fighting continued till night, thirty one white men being engaged against forty or fifty Indians. Four white men were killed and two wounded. The Indian loss is not known. They disappeared, and it is not know in what direction they went. Upon the receipt of the news in Silver City, two companies, numbering 65 men, were organized and started in search.

LATER FROM THE BELEAGARED MINERS

GALVESTON, MAY 6

"A NEWS special from Silver City, New Mexico says a courier from the Mogallen Mountains reports that Tiernan, Hunter and their party, who were thought to have been killed by the Indians are all safe. Cooney and Buhlman were killed. The Indians are still on the ground."

Similar newspaper article can be found in the Macon Telegraph - May 8, 1880

Places/Names spelled differently are Mogallon and Turnan

Guessing that Mr. Tiernan's first name was Barney born about 1828 in Ireland.
Was in Silver City, NM in 1880 census.
