Cherokee County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: May 16, 2012

Howard Warren Bias June 17, 1929 - May 16, 2012 Howard was born at home on the Cherokee Reservation in Cookson, Oklahoma to Clyde Bias and Betsy Gilbert. At an early age he went to live with his Grandmother Fannie Proctor. In his early teens he started his career of cowboying with George Stratton. When his sister Addie moved to Washington he left Oklahoma with her and her family. He met the love of his life Barbara Keown in Washington. They were married in Oregon on July 03, 1951 and had seven children. Until 1970 he moved the family from California to Oklahoma to New Mexico and Colorado. The kids could go to sleep in their bed and if they didn't wake up when they were put in the car they could wake up anywhere. On March 1, 1970 the family moved to Bakersfield and lived in the area until Barbara retired in 1997 and they moved to their retirement home in Blue Water, New Mexico. Barbara died on December 24, 2000 and in September Howard moved back to Bakersfield to be close to the family. Howard was diagnosed with dementia and developed his second family, staff Digna Sedlzky, Sandy Wright and Gurpreet Sidhu at Corinthian Gardens where he was a resident since October 2008. Howard was best known for the colorful stories he could tell about living and working on cattle ranches. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Walter Young and sisters Addie Robertson, Betty Renfro, and Edith Risley. Howard is survived by his sister Barbara Smith in Tahlequah, OK, brother-in law Harold (Bettie) Burkett in Bakersfield, sister-in-law Juanita Keeter in Thatcher AZ. His children are stepson Richard (Patricia) Burkett in Clear Lake CA, and sons Harold, Roger (Cynthia), Robert (Becky), and Russell of Bakersfield, Michael (Shawn) of Fort Rock, OR and daughters Betty (Dan) Dennison and Shirley Pletcher of Bakersfield, 23 grandchildren, and 36 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Howard will be taken by his family and buried next to Barbara in Pioneer Cemetery in Blue Water NM. There will be a barbecue for family and friends this fall.
