At an early age he went to live with his Grandmother Fannie Proctor. In his early teens he started his career of cowboying with George Stratton. When his sister Addie moved to Washington he left Oklahoma with her and her family. He met the love of his life Barbara Keown in Washington. They were married in Oregon on July 03, 1951 and had seven children. Until 1970 he moved the family from California to Oklahoma to New Mexico and Colorado. Barbara died on December 24, 2000 and in September Howard moved back to Bakersfield to be close to the family. Howard was diagnosed with dementia and developed his second family, staff Digna Sedlzky, Sandy Wright and Gurpreet Sidhu at Corinthian Gardens where he was a resident since October 2008. Howard was best known for the colorful stories he could tell about living and working on cattle ranches. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Walter Young and sisters Addie Robertson, Betty Renfro, and Edith Risley. Howard is survived by his sister Barbara Smith in Tahlequah, OK, brother-in law Harold (Bettie) Burkett in Bakersfield, sister-in-law Juanita Keeter in Thatcher AZ.
