Thomas L. Bates, age 85 of Cornelia, passed away Monday, October 04, 2010, at a private healthcare facility following an extended illness.
Born in Blakely, GA on July 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Thomas Watson and Jessie Elkins Bates. Tom was retired from Cornelia Coca-Cola Bottling Company as a manager where he had 37 years of dedicated service. He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II, stationed in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Tom was a decorated veteran having received two Purple Hearts, a Distinguished Unit Badge, an Eameto Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Cornelia 1st Presbyterian Church where he was a former church treasurer, Deacon and Elder. He also was a member of the Cornelia Kiwanis Club and the Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Hefner Bates and son, Kenneth L. Bates.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Cathy & Rick LaHayne of Clarkesville; grandchildren, Richard Justin LaHayne of Dahlonega, Zachary David LaHayne of Mt. Airy, Nancy LaHayne Blakley of Ft. Myers, FL and her husband, James, James Thomas LaHayne of Mt. Airy; sister, Betty B. Sanders of Franklin, NC; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 11:00 am Thursday, October 07, 2010, at Cornelia 1st Presbyterian Church with Rev. Blaine Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Georgia Army National Guard Military Honors and the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter #15, the Habersham County American Legion Post #84 and the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 5-7 pm on Wednesday. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the Habersham Christian Learning Center, PO Box 427, Cornelia, GA 30531 or to Cornelia 1st Presbyterian Church, PO Box 165, Cornelia, GA 30531.
