One of a family of seven children he lived in the parental home until he was 21 years old. With his brother, Henry B. Aikin, he went to Sanford, Orange County, Florida, where he was one of the pioneers in the orange industry, in clearing land and planting orange groves. Both he and his brother took up homesteads and started groves of their own which they cared for until the destroying freeze of 1886.
Upon returning to Pa. he was engaged as manager of a fruit ranch. Later he spent 14 years in the grocery business as an employee and later owner of a grocery store.
He came to Kansas in 1911.
